HEALTH / December 1: World AIDS Day

0

The week is busy for the AIDES association and its partners with numerous awareness-raising and screening actions for AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in several districts of the territory.

By way of launch, a conference-debate was first held on Monday evening at the AIDES premises in Concordia on the PREP, strategy innovative HIV prevention whose acronym stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis or how to avoid infection thanks to a treatment that starts before and after possible contact with HIV and which is mainly aimed at men who have sex with others men and sex workers, available on prescription with regular monitoring and screening. Doctor François Bissuel, infectious disease specialist at the Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital Center and partner of the AIDES association in this week of actions as well as the Red Cross, ARS, COREVIH and Safe SXM which defends LGBT + rights, underlines the importance of making the target public aware of the existence of PREP, which reduces the risk of transmission by 86%. As a reminder, a person carrying HIV does not systematically transmit the virus. If 1% of the population of Saint-Martin is affected by HIV, which makes the territory of Saint-Martin one of the regions of France most affected by the epidemic, awareness-raising, information and prevention must be general to eradicate this real public health problem which continued to spread silently during the covid health crisis. This December 1 is also a day of memory and remembrance in honor of those who have died of AIDS. Stop disease, stop prejudice, stop inequality. _VX
