Reopening of schools: Repeated hand washing, compulsory or recommended wearing of a mask, canteen, staggered recess, prohibited games… What rules will be applied in schools?

The Ministry of National Education made public this Sunday the health protocol that must be respected in schools which will reopen from May 11.

Before going to school

Parents are asked to take their child's temperature. In case of symptoms or fever (37,8 ° C or more) the child should not go to school. The personnel proceed in the same way.

Arrival and departure at school can be spread over time. In schools, the objective is to “limit crosses between pupils of different classes or of different levels”.

In classrooms, one meter distance between tables

Classrooms must be organized so as to respect a distance of at least one meter between the tables and between the tables and the teacher's desk (approximately 4m² per student, with the exception of those placed against a wall, a window, library, etc.)

“For example, a 50m² room should accommodate 16 people”.

This principle must be able to be applied in all contexts and spaces (arrival and surroundings of the school, recreation, corridors, courtyard, school catering, sanitary facilities, etc.).

In the second stage, it is recommended to favor the displacement of teachers rather than that of students and therefore to allocate a room to a class.

A “thorough” cleaning of the premises

The premises must be ventilated frequently and last at least 10 minutes each time.

If the premises have not been visited in the last 5 days, the usual cleaning protocol is sufficient.

If the premises have been frequented in the last 5 days, even partially, as a precaution, usual cleaning and disinfection must take place according to a “thorough cleaning” protocol.

Manual exchanges of balloons, toys, pencils, etc. must be “avoided or accompanied by disinfection procedures after each use”.

Mask for teachers, not for kindergarten students

For staff, the health authorities recommend wearing an anti-projection mask, also called a “general public” mask. The Ministry of Education will make two masks available to its agents in direct contact with the students per day.

Wearing a mask is “compulsory in all situations where the rules of distancing may not be respected”. It is “recommended” in all other situations.

For nursery school students, it is “to be avoided”. For those in elementary schools, it is not recommended but children can be fitted with it, if they wish and if they are able to wear it without risk of misuse.

In the second degree, wearing a mask is “compulsory in all situations where compliance with the rules of distancing may not be respected”.

When they are easily accessible to the whole population, parents will have to equip their children. In the meantime, the Ministry of Education will provide them to middle and high schools.

Barrier gestures and hand washing

The barrier gestures must be applied “permanently, everywhere and by everyone”.

Hand washing with soap and water must be carried out “at least on arrival in the school, before returning to class, especially after recess, before and after each meal, before going to the toilet and after going there, after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, in the evening before going home and upon arrival at home ”.

Otherwise, the use of a hydro-alcoholic solution may be considered.

Staged and ball-free recreations

They must be organized in groups of classes, taking into account the recommendations relating to distance and barrier gestures.

It is a question of avoiding the crossing of classes and pupils, by staggering the recreation times, by avoiding groupings of different levels, by reducing the break times according to the numbers ...

Contact and ball games should be banned, like “anything involving the exchange of objects”, as well as play structures whose contact surfaces cannot be disinfected.

In the event of organizational difficulties, recess “can be replaced by break time in class at the end of the course”.

Attendance limited to WC

The number of people present must be limited in order to respect physical distance.

The urinals used must be at least 1 meter apart.

The toilets must be able to allow students and staff to wash their hands at all times.

The canteen possible in the classroom

In the case of catering in the canteen or refectory, the organization of time and access must make it possible to limit queues and crossings of groups of students in the corridors as much as possible.

If it is not possible to eat in the usual places, it can be done “in the classroom under the supervision of an adult and in the form of trays or packed lunches, in compliance with hygiene rules”.
