RECONSTRUCTION / Building companions: already 6 months in Saint-Martin

0

Arriving last March, the national association of Compagnons Bâtisseurs has already rehabilitated 18 houses on the island, mainly in priority neighborhoods. Six months later, the association is preparing to launch the second phase of its mission with a target of 100 to 120 beneficiaries within a year.

This action was carried out thanks to the participation of companions and other volunteers but also thanks to funding from the Fondation de France. Today, the team includes fifteen employees (including a coordinator, a logistician, a site manager, four team leaders, an accounting manager, a social coordinator) as well as young people in civic service and temporary workers.

The Accompanied Self-Rehabilitation program offered by the journeyman builders is intended for people in precarious situations and is not limited to priority neighborhoods. It also requires financial or physical participation by the beneficiary on the site. To integrate the system, each file must be studied and validated in committee. “All the personal situations of beneficiaries are different, which is why we want to take the time to study on a case by case basis. This is also the reason why the association recruited a social coordinator, in order to be as close as possible to the population ”specifies Michel Baudouin, logistician.

Do you still have small jobs to do at your home? The Compagnons Bâtisseurs offer a workshop to learn the basics of carpentry every Saturday morning in Quartier d'Orléans. The association is also considering loaning construction equipment to individuals soon.
