More than a year after the passage of IRMA, the forensic experts from the North Islands are rediscovering the use of their technical platform!

Following the passage of cyclone Irma, the structures of the gendarmerie of Saint-Martin had been partially destroyed. The forensic experts were not spared and their technical platform had lost its accreditation.

A complicated situation for the proper functioning of the "judicial police" chain and for the investigators present on the island. After more than a year of work and bringing the processes up to standard, the COFRAC (French Accreditation Committee) has just accredited its reopening.

There is an unusual atmosphere in the criminal and digital identification cell (CIC-N) of Saint Martin, this morning of Monday March 18, 2019. The four criminal identification technicians (TIC) of the island are all present on the bridge and, behind their facade smiles, you can sense a certain apprehension.

At the origin of this apprehension, the passage of cyclone Irma, the loss of the accreditation of the technical platform of the technicians in criminal identification (TIC), and the investment of each one to rehabilitate it. It is in this context that two members of the French Accreditation Committee (COFRAC) from the continent will spend almost two days scrutinizing their activity and their working methods, in the company of the head of the legal support section ( SAJ) from Guadeloupe. In fact, since 2009, a Council of Europe decision has required ICTs, as well as all their European counterparts, to comply with a certain number of standards intended to guarantee maximum efficiency and quality in their work.

As a reminder, Criminal Identification Technicians are gendarmerie personnel specially trained in technical and scientific police, whose mission consists, in general terms, in looking for and highlighting the clues on the places where a crime was committed or an offense. On their technical platform, they also endeavor to "make speak" the objects handled by the authors and which require an in-depth examination. At the end of their mission, the verdict of the two evaluators falls, bringing back the smiles on the faces of the sleuths: the standards are well respected and the work carried out by the technicians in criminal identification, both from Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe. , perfectly meets European quality criteria. A decision that bodes well, not only for the conduct of the investigations but above all for the service rendered to our fellow citizens ...
