HERITAGE / Martinique: Mount Pelée and other Pitons in the north of the island listed as UNESCO World Heritage

0

It's official. Martinique becomes the 7th French natural property, the 50th in total, to become a UNESCO world heritage site.

This Saturday, September 16, the candidacy of the forests and volcanoes of Montagne Pelée and the Northern Pitons was officially validated, during the 45th World Heritage meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Great and good news which should further boost the “Martinique” destination.

“A historic moment for Martinique, but beyond that, for the Caribbean and the whole world”: it is with these words that the president of the executive council of Martinique, Serge Letchimy, welcomed the inscription, Saturday September 16, of Mount Pelée and the Pitons of northern Martinique on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Spread over nearly 14 hectares, the Pelée and Pitons du Nord volcanoes shelter all of the six types of forests of the Lesser Antilles in the best state of conservation.

A UNESCO World Heritage listing generally generates 30 to 40% additional visitors each year. Martinique has obtained a third Unesco label since 2020, after the validation of the intangible heritage skiff and the delivery of the biosphere reserve title in 2021._AF
