Paris World Games 2019 Rugby Sevens: The Saint-Martin Rugby Union experiences the high international level!

The Paris World Games meeting can be considered as the “young” Olympic games  for team sports. Created several years ago, with the support of numerous sports institutions, this great event which brought together the disciplines of football, basketball and handball at its creation, was enlarged 2 years ago by opening up to Rugby at 7, a rising discipline in both men and women.

Almost 10 participants are expected during the week of the 000 games in Paris and rugby attracts many recognized and emerging countries in this discipline. India, Canada, the USA, Cameroon, Ireland, Burkina Faso and many others send their best elements to rub against international teams.

The St Martin Rugby Union had already had the honor, two years ago, just before Irma, of being invited. The organizers once again invited our young people to this unique moment.

The Union brought together the greatest, all having learned rugby on our island, Louis, Charles, Mikaël, Alexandre, Jean-Daniel, Maxime, Lucas, Baptiste and Victor, supervised by Julien, to constitute the committed team.

It was at the Center National de Rugby de Marcoussis, like the elders of the French team, that they were welcomed.

The Draw was not favorable because the St Martinois fell in Pool A, the most raised, comprising

the national selection of Congo, the national selection of Cameroon, the Chabs 7 (team of the European circuit) and  A-Metro 92.

Our players started the tournament for the first phase last Saturday with a victory against A-Metro 92.

On the other hand, opposed to the national selections, they discovered the high level and bowed twice against the DRC and Cameroon. The large audience of connoisseurs recognized their great valor and a fierce will despite the difference in level.

Sunday saw the final stages. The St Martin Rugby Union played for 5th place but fell against the rough Wonder's 7 (another European Tour team) and the score was final (25/7).

They honorably finish sixth in the 2019 PWG tournament.

During this competition, they were able to meet the players of the France team, in preparation for the world cup in Japan and to introduce our island to the many international delegations. Thanks to their second participation, Saint-Martin rugby is fully participating in the great ball of world rugby.

The St Martin Rugby Union thanks ORANGE Caraïbes and the beach.sxm for their support and Patrick Grea for his precious advice.
