Drug trafficking: 310 kg of cocaine seized off the Lesser Antilles

The surveillance frigate "Germinal" intercepted an American sailboat, east of the Lesser Antilles, on July 4. On board, two men and 310 kilos of cocaine.

On Sunday July 4, the surveillance frigate (FS) Germinal boarded a sailboat flying the American flag on the high seas, east of the Lesser Antilles. As they approached the Navy building, the two drug traffickers set fire to their boat in order to remove the illegal cargo. After extinguishing the fire, the FS crew recovered 310 kilograms of cocaine spared by the flames and questioned the two individuals.

On the instruction of the public prosecutor of the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Fort-de-France, the two individuals, aged 44 and 51, were handed over to the investigators of the anti-narcotics office (OFAST) on their arrival in Martinique.

Both of Bulgarian nationality, they were indicted on Friday July 9 on charges of importing and exporting narcotics in an organized group, acquisition, possession, transport and offering or transfer of narcotics and participation in a criminal association with a view to commit the aforementioned crimes and offenses, before being placed in pre-trial detention.

The drugs, most likely destined for Europe, represent a loss for drug traffickers of more than 9 million euros on resale. This seizure is the 7th seizure of the year 2021 for the armed forces in the West Indies, bringing the quantity of cocaine withdrawn from the market thanks to these maritime resources to more than 6,7 tonnes. This combined operation between the various State services, initiated by OFAST, was conducted under the direction of the Prefect of Martinique, Government delegate for State action at sea in the West Indies, and the JIRS of Prosecutor of the Republic of Fort-de-France.
