MEMORY: Attacks of September 11, 2001, 22 years already

The sun shone high in the New York sky this morning of September 11, 2001. It was 8:46 a.m. when the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center, symbol of the greatness of the United States, at more than 710 km/h. The first images are broadcast, confusion is general, the world is in shock.

At 9:02 a.m., a second plane struck the south tower between the 77th and 88th floors. The terrorist attack is then confirmed, spreading panic in the Big Apple. George W. Bush, President of the United States for only eight months, was visiting a school in Florida when he was informed of the tragic events. The expression on his face changes in a second. At 9:30 a.m., the president speaks to the media: “We had a national tragedy, two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, in what appears to be a terrorist attack on our country. » At 9:38 a.m., an attack was carried out in Arlington where a plane hit the Pentagon at more than 800 km/h. The airspace is closed. At 9:58 a.m., the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, killing hundreds of people trapped within it. Shortly after, a fourth plane heading for Washington was hijacked. Thanks to the courage and revolt of the passengers, the Boeing 737 which was targeting the White House crashed in a field in Shankville, Pennsylvania. At 10:28 a.m., the north tower collapsed. The World Trade Center disappears from the Manhattan landscape. The attacks of September 11, 2001 were the deadliest in history with 2.977 deaths, attacks carried out by 19 hijackers killed during this coordinated and meticulously prepared attack by the jihadist organization Al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden. The 4 suicide attacks will quickly lead to the invasion of the American army in Afghanistan. 22 years after this tragedy, the memory of the attacks of September 11, 2001 is still vivid in our minds. In place of Ground Zero, now stands One World Trade Center, called the Freedom Tower, the tallest skyscraper in New York with a facade of reflective glass. The building, which opened its doors in 2014, houses shelters accessible by stairs reserved for the use of firefighters; safety was one of the obsessions of the reconstruction. The original footprints of the Twin Towers have been transformed into a memorial honoring the victims of the attacks: the 9/11 Memorial. _VX
