The NGO "Electriciens sans Frontières" continues to shine the sun in Saint-Martin

From Irma, the NGO Electriciens sans Frontières (ESF), partner of the crisis unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, intervenes in the territory of Saint-Martin to electrically secure houses damaged by the cyclone.

From September 2017, ESF supplied and commissioned generators and distributed 500 emergency solar lamps to the most vulnerable families. Many Saint-Martinois remember these ESF teams marauding the neighborhoods. The NGO continues its interventions in the territory, to repair electrical circuits and install boxes equipped with circuit breakers to secure homes and avoid the risk of fire or electrocution. Once this emergency work has been carried out, ESF asks residents to contact a local electrician to finalize their installation.

Today, the NGO Electriciens sans Frontières is proud to launch a new project in the territory of Saint-Martin, the distribution of 750 solar kits to prevent the next hurricane season. These kits from the Schneider Electric brand, a partner of ESF on numerous projects around the world, consist of a photovoltaic panel, a box with battery and four high-power lamps. They also allow smart phones to be recharged. The company SMEC offers free of charge to ESF the logistics of delivery and storage on the island. Those who have experienced IRMA understand the value of owning such a lamp.

Dorcille Barry Mitchel receives the first Solar Lamp Kit

On Thursday, February 25, the first kit was installed at the home of Madame Dorcille Barry Mitchel, who just celebrated her 103 years in January. Territorial advisor Annick Pétrus, senator from Saint-Martin and godmother of this operation, also representing President Daniel Gibbs, solemnly handed over the equipment to Mrs. Barry Mitchel. ESF volunteers, accompanied by the representative of Schneider Electric for the West Indies and the director of SMEC, explained to Dorcille and his daughters the instructions for use.

This project is carried out in partnership with the SEGPA section of the Mont des Accords college. Teachers and students will work, during the last quarter, on the preparation and distribution of the kits, in order to then be able to transmit this information to the beneficiaries and more generally, to work on renewable energies.

Finally, a video and an exhibition will be prepared by the pupils to be presented to parents at the end of the school year. An identification carried out by ESF made it possible to target habitats lacking in electricity, they will be the first beneficiaries.

The second beneficiaries will be the nursing staff working with individuals in priority areas of city policy, often forced to provide care in insufficient light conditions. This action is coordinated by the Collective of Nursing Solidarity (CSI), responsible for identifying the nursing staff affected by these needs.

Local associations working with youth are also partners to contribute to this project. The distribution locations are kindly made available by the companion builders, partner of ESF since 2018 (continuation and end in our edition of tomorrow).
