DENGUE: "The end of the epidemic seems near" partly French

“Surveillance indicators have reached low levels over the past four weeks, both in city medicine and in hospitals in Saint-Martin. The end of the epidemic seems close and will also be confirmed in the coming weeks, ”comments Santé Publique France at the end of February.

The epidemic began in the third week of January in 2020; since 2 clinically suggestive cases of dengue have been recorded in Saint-Martin.

Over the past four weeks, the estimated number of consultations for suspected dengue fever has fluctuated between 10 and 25 consultations per week in city medicine.

While at the end of 2020, three epidemic outbreaks had been identified, Santé Publique France indicates that no new outbreak has been identified since the beginning of 2021.

No emergency room visits have been reported in the past two weeks either. “Since the start of the epidemic, 160 emergency room visits for suspected dengue fever have been recorded. Of these, 16% concerned patients aged 0 to 15 years, 49% in 15 to 44 years, 27% in 45 to 64 years and 8% in 65 years and over. Among these passages, 33 hospitalizations were recorded ”, detail the health authorities.

Finally, a serious case of dengue (DENV-1) was notified in Saint-Martin in February by the intensive care unit of the CHU de Guadeloupe. This person died and clinicians ruled that this death was directly related to dengue.
