Goat breeding in Saint-Martin

There are those who let the goat grow and those who prefer to breed them, even if it means becoming a goat. For the breeders of Saint-Martin, most of whom have a job nearby, breeding is a hobby that allows them to enjoy traditional stews or goat soups.

The animals are sold between individuals for a price ranging from 200 to 300 €, but the most beautiful are also bought by the Indian community of Guadeloupe who comes especially to Saint-Martin to choose the kid who will be sacrificed during the ceremony in homage to Mahakali , a divinity of time. The prices can then go up to 3000 €, because the goat must not have a broken horn or stain on the coat. Apart from festivals like I love my Ram in Colombier or religious festivals, raising sheep is not easy: 1h30 of work morning and evening, dealing with thefts and attacks from stray dogs that kill livestock animals , with the drought which obliges to go to seek herbs and food or even to buy it… The new slaughterhouse also obliges to pay between 30 and 40 € to kill the animal in due form and a stab in the face. throat is no longer sufficient. There is also a lack of infrastructure to diversify production and use goat milk to make cheese. Living only on income from kidding goat is therefore impossible, but nothing prevents you from feasting on West Indian dishes! _HM
