IRMA, 5 years already… Statement by Chairman Louis MUSSINGTON

This Tuesday, September 6 was a sad anniversary date for Saint-Martin. It takes us back to September 6, 2017, the day Hurricane Irma hit.

Louis Mussington, President of the Collectivity of Saint-Martin, declared this Tuesday, September 6: “5 years ago, to the day, we suffered one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic zone. This date, like September 5, 1995 (Hurricane Luis) is forever etched in our collective memory.

Those who have experienced the devastating effect of these extraordinary hurricanes have this emotional commonality and know what courage, resilience and solidarity mean.

Many of you lost everything that day and joined forces to raise your heads and rebuild your possessions. Through this individual effort, you have acted for the collective good and contributed to raising this territory that we love so much.

On this anniversary day, I have a moved thought for the 11 victims and the families hard mourned by Irma. The human losses remain our greatest wound.

5 years later, we still feel this feeling of sadness and helplessness that invaded us in the early morning, when we discovered the many damages. But very quickly, we joined forces and chose to look to the future.

I want to salute you all because if the island is what it is today, it is thanks to you.

We still have a lot to accomplish but we have a unique chance, Saint-Martin is a territory endowed with exceptional potential.

We are fully aware of this and you can be convinced of our commitment and our determination to take concrete action over the next 5 years.

With my RSM-A majority team, we are doing everything in our power to complete the reconstruction and offer you new structuring projects, in accordance with the vision that is ours and that you widely supported during the last elections. local.

This sustainable development, we need it today for our daily living environment but also tomorrow to leave our children an innovative and prosperous land. We are all working on it together and we will have the opportunity when the time comes to present our roadmap to you.

On this Tuesday, September 6, 2022, I send you all my gratitude and that of our territorial institution for the work already done.

Together, we will go even further to give our Friendly Island all the attention and the sustainable and controlled development that it deserves and that all the citizens of our territory fully deserve. »
