Fortune de mer: 74-year-old sailor found after four days of drift

At the end of last week, the "Caribella" sailboat registered in Saint-Eustache had to be towed to Saint-Martin, after it was recovered off Saba following a shortage of fuel. The boat with only one person on board, a 74-year-old skipper, had been drifting for four days.

It was the Coast Guard Rescue and Coordination Center that received a call from the authorities in St. Kitts that a sailboat was drifting near the island of Saba. The craft was located 32 miles, approximately 59 km, south of Saba with one person on board. The coast guard “Poema” from Sint-Maarten came to the aid of the sailboat. Upon arrival, the crew provided food and water to the undernourished mariner who looked exhausted. The skipper of the boat has expressed his desire to continue his journey to Saint-Eustache after having taken a little rest. In view of the physical condition of the sailor, the "Poema" towed the sailboat to Saint-Martin, dissuading the man from continuing to sail, in the immediate future, towards his final destination._RM
