Miscellaneous Facts: Several people arrested for possession of stolen cars

0

In recent weeks, police forces have carried out various targeted roadside checks. During these, several vehicles suspected of having been stolen were confiscated by the police. During the inspection of the cars it was discovered that the vehicle identification numbers and/or engine numbers had been altered or changed.

Since the beginning of the implementation of these wild checks which have been running since July and have continued since, seven people have been arrested by the police because they had bought or were in possession of a car which was allegedly stolen. The Sint Maarten Police remind the population to avoid buying a potentially stolen car. But how to recognize them? Many stolen vehicles are resold for well below their true value. Some buyers, thinking they are getting the deal of the century, then have no idea that the cars have been stolen until it is too late. And at this point, the buyers are at a double disadvantage because the vehicle will be confiscated by the police and they could be arrested for possession of stolen goods, and the money they put into buying the vehicle will be at never lost. Police officers are busy doing spot checks on vehicles that are usually the target of this type of mischief, namely being stolen and then resold on the island. The Sint Maarten police are working with their French counterparts to put an end to vehicle thefts throughout the territory. Law enforcement on both sides of the island are stepping up checks on any cars that are suspected of being stolen. _VX
