Howling sirens, gendarmes and firefighters went from 8:30 am on April 1 to the Rémire-Montjoly penitentiary in Guyana where the guards faced a mutiny by prisoners who set fire to some of the neighborhoods. The police were dispatched to the scene.
A prison supervisor explained the situation during a radio flash: “the agents who were present were able to stop the progression, they are on site… the prisoners set fire in the corridor… above us, a helicopter is in overflight and the gendarmes are ready to intervene ... he describes
He said, however, that the security of the guards and other detainees was not threatened.... we have the experience, all the agents have been withdrawn, the watchtowers have unfolded their weapons, we are in a position of internal intervention and it is the gendarmes and the prosecutor who are now in charge of the movements ”.
Motivations still unknown
We do not know exactly the motivations, but for the supervisor, the suspension of the visiting rooms due to the Covid-19 crisis could create a certain tension. Even if special attention had been paid to the provision of hygiene resources.
