Territorial elections: a participation rate varying between 45 and 55%

0

On March 20 and 27, Saint-Martinois will be called upon for the fourth time to elect the 23 members of the territorial council since the transition to the Collectivity. This is an important deadline since the men and women elected are those who govern the territory for five years. However, this local vote struggles to attract citizens.

In sixteen years, Saint-Martin has gained 5 new potential voters to reach 873 people registered on the electoral lists, but only 18 additional people voted in the second round in 905 compared to 1 (427 against 2017).
In 2007, during the first territorial elections, almost the same number of people voted as in 2001 (around 7). However, in relation to the number of people registered on the electoral lists, the participation rate was down by 800%.
In 2012, the participation rate increased by 5 points with 9 voters, or +871 voters.
Between 2012 and 2017, while the number of people registered on the electoral lists increased by 5,5% (+996 people), the number of people who voted in the second round fell by 6,75%. In March 2017, 9 people voted, which is 204 less than in 667. In five years, the participation rate has dropped by 2012 points, from 10 to 55%.
It remains to be seen whether the candidates in the next elections will be able to mobilize better.
