0

Secularism Day at School is celebrated every December 9. This year, a march was organized by several schools in Quartier d'Orléans, followed by a ceremony in the presence of officials in the parking lot of Clair Saint-Maximim primary school.

Carried with a master hand by Evelyne Fleming, the event certainly revolved around the fundamental question of secularism but also on the desire to transmit the ideas of sharing to children to cement the whole of the French nation. Several groups of students from different schools in Quartier d'Orléans proudly wore the blue, white and red colors and banners stamped with the motto of France: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité… et Laïcité. December 9 is the anniversary of the enactment of the 1905 law concerning the separation of Church and State. This law is considered as one of the founding texts of secularism in France. Vincent Berton, delegate prefect of the Northern Islands, did not fail to recall this during his speech in front of the children by paying tribute to Samuel Paty, professor of history and geography killed in 2020 for having defended the values of secularism. . For Harry Christophe, vice-rector, the question of secularism is part of the history of France and of the school in particular. 143 children took part in the dissemination of this message, including students with disabilities from Localized Units for Inclusive Education (ULIS). Marc Fabre from the Regional Academic Delegation for Youth, Commitment and Sports (DRAJES), Lieutenant-Colonel Maxime Wintzer, Harry Christophe, Vice-Rector, Robert Garon, President of the Association of Alumni,  combatants, Julien Gumbs, president of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (CESC), or even Wendy Gumbs, all were moved by the performance of the children: poem in duet, recitation of each revisited article of the charter of secularism in French, English , Creole and Spanish, singing by the choir of the college of La Roche Gravée de Moho and national anthem, the ceremony was beautiful and solemn. The raising of the flag carried out by two children and Vincent Berton closed the event which advocated freedom of expression, tolerance and living together. _VX
