At around 12 p.m. on July 2018, 18, a Chinese grocery store in Grand Case had been the target of two robbers, one of whom was armed. One of the employees, David Kenneth Edwards, had intervened "courageously and is trying to subdue one of the perpetrators," said the police.
Shots were fired, however, injuring David Kenneth Edwards who had managed to snatch clothing from one of the robbers. This allowed the investigators to identify him by means of the DNA analyzed on the garment, and to arrest him.
Today, he is rewarded for "his exemplary civic conduct, which is particularly courageous and meritorious in view of the risks involved". The prefect wanted to give him the bronze medal for acts of courage and dedication.
The arrested malefactor was sentenced on June 25, 2019 to five years' imprisonment by the Basse Terre court and prohibited from holding a weapon for five years. He has appealed his judgment but is still in prison.
