The President of the Collectivity and the Territorial Council, Daniel Gibbs spoke at the Territorial Council of July 30 on the health situation of the island in connection with the COVID-19 epidemic. A speech articulated around the need to "respect with rigor the barrier gestures" in order to "find an acceptable economic and social activity"

The question of the return of border controls was invited on July 30 at the Territorial Council, in the general declaration of President Daniel Gibbs.

A hot topic since “the worrying epidemic outbreak” observed among our Dutch neighbors. (More than 45 cases recorded in one week - Editor's note). "The fight is not won: the virus lurks and strikes, again ..." recalled Daniel Gibbs in a speech articulated around the need to "strictly respect barrier gestures" and  "To find an acceptable economic and social activity".  If the President of the Territorial Council was careful not to tackle the thorny issue of border controls which is debating among the population head on, Daniel Gibbs recalled the importance of preserving the territory from a new confinement. “The main thing is, in my view, to avoid new restrictions on public freedoms, and new administrative injunctions impacting, on the French side, the hotel and catering sector. We must also rule out any new air travel control measures, between Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe and Martinique, on the one hand, and between Saint-Martin and hexagonal France, on the other. The success of our economic recovery plan, based essentially on a recovery in regional tourism, depends on it. Our economy, already severely impacted by two months of restrictions, would not recover from a new confinement… ”he declared.
