Coronavirus: Reinforced precautionary measures taken for our seniors at EHPAD Bethany Home

0

In the fight against the spread of the epidemic, the EHPAD Bethany Home has taken steps to reorganize care and adapt life in the establishment to this challenge by complying with the recommendations of the health authorities with the support of the ARS Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Saint-Barthélemy and the Collectivity of Saint Martin.

As of March 16, 2020, the activation of the Blue Plan at the EHPAD enabled the implementation of methods for detecting covid-19 in the event of suspected contamination of a resident or a group of residents. The establishment has identified and developed a specific sector for the care of possible patients. The professionals worked on carrying out the care procedures in conjunction with the Saint-Martin Hospital Center and the attending physician.

A business continuity plan has been developed in order to continue the missions, even in the event of reduced staff.

A COVID 19 Crisis Unit bringing together all the heads of departments has been set up. The coordinating doctor, Dr Olivo is the referent.

The measures taken are as follows:

- Total suspension of visits since March 15 and stop of residents' outings (except for medical reasons)

- Suspension of non-essential interventions by external stakeholders (physiotherapist, pedicure, volunteers, etc.)

- Reinforcement of barrier measures for all staff and obligation to wear a surgical mask for all staff in contact with residents since March 25

- Drastic limitation and filtering of entries from external providers within the establishment. The application of barrier measures is strict and controlled,

- Staff training with specific modules for health professionals on knowledge of the disease, national health strategy, individual protection measures, - Reinforcement of procedures for cleaning premises and equipment,

- Creation of a circulation plan for residents within the EHPAD taking into account their state of health and including the organization of meals

- A circuit with a dressing room has been organized for all staff in contact with residents in order to limit the entry of contact elements into the establishment.

It must be imagined that this organization is an upheaval in the lives of residents used to being surrounded by their loved ones, by association volunteers ...

Professionals make every effort to limit the effects of this confinement on the morale of residents. The activities have been modified by the barrier measures but not eliminated (distance of at least 1m between people, choice of individual activities, etc.). Easter is prepared around manual activities, decorations.

All of the services are working to build a dyke around Bethany Home to protect residents from the epidemic and is committed to maintaining quality of care and living conditions for them.

To date, fortunately, no case has been reported.

The establishment remains in contact with families by phone or email. They are informed of the arrangements made for the health of their loved ones. The teams remain at their disposal to answer their questions, obviously give them news and put them in touch with their parent.

Annette Philips, president of the EHPAD, is mobilized daily on these aspects within the establishment. The Collectivity of Saint-Martin has equipped Bethany Home with protective equipment (masks, gloves, hydroalcoholic gel, liquid soap).

Several measures have also been taken for elderly people followed at home:

- Compulsory wearing of the surgical mask by all staff,

- Training of the staff of the SSIAD, by the coordinating doctor, in barrier gestures, social distancing, health strategy and disease clinic,

Daily temperature taking of all patients and service agents,

- Stop of passages in the afternoon for patients not requiring technical care,

- Implementation of a COVID kit to rationalize the use of the mask.
