COOPERATION / Cross-border cooperation operational program: what are the projects?

0

In 2014, the European Union created a specific operational program for Saint Martin, a so-called cross-border cooperation PO (PO CT). During the seven-year period (period of validity of the funds), Europe provides credits to finance joint projects which serve the interests of the two territories. This PO has € 10 million, including € 1,5 million for technical assistance.

Three priorities were given:

Raise the level of water and sanitation infrastructure

In this area, it involves sharing a treatment plant. Sint Maarten having as a project to build a station in Cole Bay, Saint-Martin proposed to connect to it, thus saving land. The construction cost is financed by the Dutch side and the connection by the French side.

4 million euros under the PO CT would be brought by Europe to Saint-Martin.

Protect the environment

The aim is to "strengthen the protection of the Simpson Bay lagoon through cross-border management". It is planned that the European credits granted under the PO CT can be used to carry out an environmental assessment of the entire lagoon. This study should allow it to identify projects aimed at improving and preserving the environmental quality and biodiversity of the lagoon. 1,5 million euros are earmarked for this project.

Prevent the risk of flooding

The aim is to develop the Belle Plaine watershed shared between the French and Dutch parts, to carry out water management and regulation works there. Today the PO CT would contribute up to 3 million euros to the realization of management and regularization works.
