Beach Tennis: Tom Lamort goes to the net

It is a dream that started at the age of 8. Since then, Tom Lamort has nurtured the ambition to become Beach Tennis champion. A sport that took root in the Caribbean in the early 2000s.

At only 17 years old, the young man is already collecting two titles and has had the opportunity to attend prestigious championships. Today, he is preparing to take a step forward in the professional world.

Ranked fourteenth in the French beach tennis ranking and first in the U18 category, Tom Lamort is aiming even higher: “I'm going to settle in Bordeaux because beach tennis is very developed there. I inquired, there is only one club in the city but the best French players play there. I will have to prove myself, and that I catch the eye of the coach. It is close to my heart, ”he explains, determined. Until then, the young man will not stop working to improve his level, training at least 2 days a week.

Under the colors of the Friendly Caribbean Beach Tennis association, the young player was able to participate in inter-island tournaments. A formative experience: “when I go into the field, I change world,” he says. It is for young people like Tom Lamort that the club wishes to give a boost to young local talents: "We encourage members to increase the number of tournaments by helping them with mobility" explains the club. “There were often several of us traveling and each time the club financed all the trips,” says Tom. In the same vein, he got involved in giving lessons on a voluntary basis to other members of the club, a moment that he describes as convivial: "I wanted through my experience as a strong competitor, to help beginners to progress".

   Tom Lamort's journey

Young talent in the discipline, Tom Lamort was able to participate in the French junior championships in 2018. “During this first edition I reached the quarter-finals and finished sixth,” he recalls. A year later, he joined the Friendly Caribbean Beach Tennis club and again took part in the French championships, but this time in the Seniors category: "I reached the quarter-finals and finished eighth," he confides with pride. Small or large championships, the young man describes himself as a "crazy about competitions". As soon as he sees one, he jumps at the opportunity: "it's my passion, a sport that I have always adored", and which he dreams of making his profession of: "I would like to make a career in this discipline and become a professional champion! ”he enthuses. This summer due to the epidemic, Tom will not be able to participate in the French championships as planned. Disappointed by the news, he does not let himself be put down: "I knew that some competitions were going to be organized in France" he explains, now impatient to resume competition and relive the atmosphere of major meetings, such as that of the French championships.
