The number of deaths by drowning has been significant since last month, reports the "Drowning 2015" survey unveiled yesterday by the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance. Swimming is not supervised in Saint-Martin, vigilance is strongly recommended to avoid dramas.

Since June 1, the Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has identified 275 accidental drownings, 109 of which are the cause of death, as part of its investigation which will end on September 30, supported by several departments. On this occasion, the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes) published a brochure on the various precautions to be taken entitled: "Bathing without danger".

Here are some recommendations with your children:

- always stay with them when they play at the water's edge or in the water;

- bathe at the same time as them;

- designate a single adult responsible for their supervision;

- if they cannot swim, equip them with armbands (CE marking and NF 13138-1 standard) suitable for their size, weight and age as soon as they are near water;

- beware of buoys or other floating items that do not protect against drowning;

- keep an eye on them at all times, even if they are fitted with armbands.
