LOCAL LIFE: Resilience Village this Saturday, October 7 in Marigot

0

In 2022, state services, in conjunction with its partners, organized the “All resilient to risks” day at the Robert Weinum high school. This year, they want to reach out to the general public by setting up a resilience village on the Marigot seafront this Saturday, October 7 from 8 a.m. to 13 p.m.

As part of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction initiated by the United Nations (UN), this morning dedicated to resilience aims to raise awareness and inform the Saint-Martin population about natural and technological risks.

During yesterday's press conference, Vincent Berton, delegated prefect of the Northern Islands, highlighted the good individual resilience of Saint-Martin residents who keep up to date with forecasts and respect safety instructions. Unlike collective resilience which is rather lacking and which requires, according to the person concerned, progress to be made, whether in terms of risk management, waste or construction standards: “There is a certain contradiction between the two resiliences, that’s what we’re organizing this day around in a very sensitive and serious context of climate change,” added Vincent Berton. By choosing the seafront as the venue for the demonstration, state services hope to reach as many people as possible. This Saturday, October 7 from 8 a.m. to 13 p.m., the resilience village will be divided into 4 zones. The first will be devoted to earthquakes and tsunamis with the DEAL to cover the major risks aspect, the Martinique Volcanology and Seismology Observatory, the Tilaya drones company and the civil protection association. The second zone dedicated to rescue will be occupied by the SNSM, the Nautical Brigade of the National Gendarmerie, the AFPS (first aid), the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) and the unprecedented presence of the Sint Maarten Firefighters ( firefighters). The cyclone component will be located in the 1rd zone of the village with the Interministerial Civil Defense and Protection Service (SIDPC), the Community, the Armed Forces in the Antilles (FAA) and the Red Cross. Finally, the last area will involve climate change, which requires awareness and the implementation of ecological planning in view of future forecasts, with Météo France, the Department of the Environment, Planning and Housing (DEAL) for the sargassum aspect, the Nature Reserve and the One Shark Project (prevention of shark attacks).

Numerous free activities await the public such as the demonstration of sea rescue and first aid exercises visible from the village and broadcast live on a giant screen, introductions to the use of fire extinguishers, defibrillators and first aid procedures, a virtual dives in the waters of Saint-Martin and the possibility of boarding the Sint Maarten fire truck. Prizes making up the emergency kits will be won by drawing lots or during question-and-answer games. Meet tomorrow at 8 a.m. in the taxi parking lot on the Marigot seafront. _VX
