The Réserve Naturelle de Saint-Martin has announced that a miniature sperm whale was discovered at the end of August adrift about 40 nautical miles east off Saint-Martin. It was a fisherman from Saint-Barthélemy who found the carcass of the cetacean at sea, "identified thanks to the photographs transmitted, as belonging to the Kogidae family (probable Kogia sima)". The reserve specifies that this confirms the presence of this family in the northern islands, "where it was not yet documented by the Agoa sanctuary, unlike Martinique and Guadeloupe".
