St Maarten: Several sites polluted by wastewater

0

The Sint Maarten Nature Foundation carried out a series of surveys on seven sites in the Dutch part to estimate the degree of pollution: the lagoon at Cole Bay and Simpson Bay, the pond at Mullet, the beaches of Kim Sha and Great Bay , as well as the ponds of Belair, Fresh and Great Salt.

"Four sites including Kim Sha Beach and part of Simpson Bay Beach, tourist areas, have revealed the presence of water from sewers," says the foundation.

The waters of four of the seven sites revealed the presence of coliform bacteria, bacteria associated with faecal pollution (sewage). They are the lagoon at Cole Bay, the ponds of Great Salt and Fresh Pond but also the beach of Kim Sha. "The presence of this bacteria in Kim Sha Beach is worrying," comments the Nature Foundation which will conduct more analyzes of the waters of this beach where cruise passengers are brought. However, Great bay beach did not show any signs of pollution.

This is the first time since Hurricane Irma, that the Nature St Maarten Foundation has carried out water quality tests. (Photo credit: Nature Foundation Source: www.soualigapost.com)
