The controls and awareness-raising carried out in recent days having allowed the removal of platforms and buoys at sea, the bathing ban was lifted last Saturday following a joint agreement from the president, Daniel Gibbs and the prefect, Serge Gouteyron.

Since the tragic accident that occurred on December 10 in Orient Bay, measures were quickly applied:

• Prohibition of bait fishing and fish feeding;

• Control of the conditions of the discharge of waste water from restaurants;

• Removal of floating objects such as buoys, which can act as DCP.

  Several actions are implemented to ensure a reinforced level of security:

• Overflights of the coastal borders of the territory from 11h00 to 12h00 and from 14h00 to 15h00, by the use of drones, over a period of 15 days;

• Surveillance by nautical patrols from the national gendarmerie, the reserve and the SDIS for 15 days;

• Dissemination of recommendations to users of the sea.

  In addition, it is recommended to favor the bathing hours between 9 am and 16 pm.

The territorial waters of the French Antilles will also be the subject of special attention from French scientists thanks to the establishment of a program in collaboration with all the players in the environment in the Caribbean. This is intended to improve everyone's knowledge of the behavior of sharks in our waters thanks to the studies carried out, and can be used to inform a shared database. The action of this scientific group will be quickly put in place via:

• The creation of a network of aware observers: professional fishermen,  sea, nautical activities professionals for the transmission of shark observations to the Nature Reserve and the group of scientific experts;

• The implementation of a protocol to practice non-lethal fishing for tiger sharks: shark identification, collection and tagging. This procedure will be piloted by the scientific group with local stakeholders.

In order to guarantee a reinforced level of security, the Prefecture and the Collectivity point out that the involvement and vigilance of each citizen remains essential. _AF
