GOLF: Robert MacIntyre wins the Italian Open, Frenchman Victor Perez 3rd

0

The last round of this Italian Open will have kept all its promises. It will indeed have been necessary to play extra time to know the winner

Robert MacIntyre, the Scottish left-hander was 3 strokes behind the English leader Fitzpatrick on Sunday morning at the start of the last lap.

MacIntyre released an exceptional -7 card with no less than 10 birdies while Fitzpatrick was content with a -4 which placed them tied at -14 at the end of the 18 holes.

A "play-off" was therefore necessary to designate the winner and it was with a final birdie at 18 that the Scot won this Italian Open, the Englishman not being able to do better than par.

Rory McIlroy, next to his golf on Sunday, struggled with his swing most of the day. The world number 2 will never really have been able to play the leading roles after a double bogey conceded from the 1st.

Victor Perez, who also almost finished at -14 and playing the three-way play-off, finished in 3rd place ahead of McIlroy.

A very good omen for the rest of the season and the French Open which starts tomorrow.
