What happens to sargassum once collected?

0

Since 2015, the 20 brigadiers of the green brigade of the Center Symphorien d'Insertion have been working to clean up the beaches exposed to the sargassum stranding. They constitute heaps collected by the Community using a dump truck which then deposits them at the eco-site. Sargassum is stored at the top of the landfill in a pile, outdoors, time to dry. They are added to the other vegetable waste that is crushed, and represent only 5% of the total volume of green waste. The ground material is moistened for a few days in a pit containing the waste from treatment plants, septic tanks and grease traps. When the mash has reached a good degree of maturation, it is screened and transformed into compost sold to professionals and individuals all over the island. "Unlike fertilizers, compost is an organic amendment that adds nutrients to the soil," says Jean-Pierre Tey.
