Sargassum forecast: Saint-Martin at high risk

0

In its pelagic sargassum stranding monitoring and forecasting bulletin for the northern islands communicated on May 30, Météo France places the level of risk at high for the territory of Saint-Martin. Saint-Barthélemy remains at medium risk.

For the Antilles zone, there are many rafts in the zone 0 to 300 km to the east of the coasts of the Antilles arc from the Grenadines to the north of the arc. To these detections, it is still necessary to add algae further east towards the center of the Atlantic (up to at least 1 km offshore) on the Barbados – North height of the archipelago. All of these detections present a high risk of grounding for the Northern Islands. Many rafts are detected between Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, these could run aground on our territory thanks to the currents.

For the sister island, the detections are also numerous but more scattered. Although the risk of grounding is probable, it is nevertheless lower than for Saint-Martin. The presence of Sargassum in the danger zones for all the French islands of the West Indies is therefore well and truly confirmed. The risk of grounding for the next 15 days remains high. _VX
