Politics: Saint Martin continues its efforts for the environment

The passage of IRMA generated bulky and rubble of any kind with an estimated volume of 90 m³ (sheets, plants, wood, containers etc.), causing a huge challenge in terms of clearing and reprocessing, especially since each debris can turn into a projectile in the event of a cyclone.

In Saint-Martin, the day after IRMA, road clearing work was started and 11 temporary storage areas were set up to relieve congestion in the area. 55888 tonnes of waste were transported to the Grandes Cayes ecosite between September and June 2018. Currently, around 20 to 25% of land debris remains scattered over the territory. Of the 5000 user vehicles counted after IRMA, 1952 vehicles were deposited at the ecosite and 1085 were effectively destroyed and evacuated on June 30.

To speed up the process, the Collectivity launched a clean-up campaign from May 10 to July 15, 2018 with an important communication targeting the population. Dumpsters were placed on the territory and access to the ecosite made free during this operation, which however met with mixed success. During the month of September, the Prefecture will promote the creation of a reprocessing system for inert waste, in order to avoid their dispersion over the territory. It will also put in place an action plan aimed at stepping up pollution control rates for user vehicles.
