EDUCATIONAL BOOK: "Learning to fly away"... and to fight against illiteracy

0

Launched during the eighth edition of the National Days of Action against Illiteracy in September 2021, "Learning to Fly" published by Éditions Orphie is a progressive method of reading and writing signed Nicole Anne Parfait and Isabelle Facelina Chaumet in intended for adults suffering from illiteracy, but also for trainers in this field.

Illiteracy concerns people who, after going to school, have not acquired sufficient mastery of reading, writing and calculation to be independent in the simple situations of everyday life. Not to be confused with illiteracy where no school instruction in reading and writing has been given. The figures speak for themselves, 7% of the adult population aged 18 to 65 having been educated in France is in a situation of illiteracy, that is to say 2.500.000 people in mainland France. The overseas territories hardly escape this silent scourge: 23% in Réunion, 20% in Guadeloupe and Guyana, 14% in Martinique and 58% in Mayotte, according to INSEE, whose percentages date back to 2014. After reading in 2021, illiteracy was declared a “Major national cause” in 2013, underlining the importance and urgency of acting to combat it. Nicole Anne Parfait and Isabelle Facelina Chaumet, mother and daughter in life, have joined the cause by developing a progressive method of reading and writing for adults called “Learning to fly away”. For lack of suitable manuals for adults, Nicole Anne Parfait, trainer in illiteracy in training centers in Martinique, created and compiled learning sheets related to overseas culture for 7 years, according to the results obtained with the learners. Sensitive to this same cause, Isabelle, a lawyer in Saint Martin, joined her mother's initiative to create an innovative method to offer more autonomy to adults affected by illiteracy.

It took them three years to create this book, which has the advantage of using words specific to Caribbean life, which allows learners to feel concerned and identify with their daily lives. Fighting against illiteracy goes well beyond learning, it is also a question for people suffering from these disabling shortcomings of regaining confidence and self-esteem, illiteracy is too often associated with a feeling of shame that reinforces the fear of talking about it. "Learn to fly" opens with an alphabet, the fundamental basis of writing and reading, and offers many tips, rules of grammar and/or conjugation and calculation, a diary to help you find your way around the space and time, without forgetting the encouragement quotes essential to the learning process. The new method is not a textbook, an often off-putting medium for illiterate adults.res. Nicole wanted this book to reflect the three essential attributes for supporting these adults, namely: patience, benevolence and empathy. Bet won.

The two women will be in signing session at the seaside bookstore in Marigot this Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to noon where the "learning to fly" method is available at the democratic price of 20€.. _VX
