On May 26, 2016, the National Gendarmerie received a phone call to inform them of the presence of a lifeless body on the shore near the "Belle Créole" hotel in Nettle Bay.

The discovered individual has no identity document and no recent disappearance has been brought to the attention of the Gendarmerie. According to the medical examiner present, the man drowned a few days ago already. An investigation is opened and entrusted to the Community of Brigades of Saint-Martin in order to determine the causes of death and to identify the victim. A few days later, the investigators made a comparison with a press release published in the Dutch press and which reported the disappearance of a devotee from a Colebay church in Sint-Maarten. The soldiers therefore seized the toothbrush of the person reported missing for the purpose of comparison with the DNA taken from the corpse. The results have just reached the Gendarmerie. The person discovered on the beach is indeed the one who was reported missing. The victim is a 33-year-old Haitian boy. The investigation determined that he died by drowning and that the death occurred a few days before the discovery of the body. In accordance with the directives of the public prosecutor, the body was handed over to the family. _AF
