Martinique: A catamaran destroyed by flames, the castaway brought back safe and sound on dry land

0

A spectacular fire broke out last Thursday on a catamaran. The CROSS AG (Antilles-Guyana Regional Operational Center for Surveillance and Rescue) coordinated a rescue operation off Bellefontaine and immediately triggered rescue, in particular by engaging the Civil Security helicopter DRAGON 972 as well as the helicopter Customs RACAM.

At the same time, alerted by the smoke, fishermen also went to the area of the fire to provide assistance.

The owner of the catamaran managed to escape the flames by taking refuge on his tender. The castaway, brought back safe and sound to Case-Pilote, was taken care of by the firefighters and the CHUM.

No casualties were reported. As the ship could not be salvaged, it continued to drift out to sea.

Safety messages addressed to navigators are regularly broadcast by the CROSS AG to warn them of the presence of a drifting wreck in the area. _AF
