ASSOCIATION: 60 kilos of school supplies distributed to children in Quartier d'Orléans

This Wednesday, September 7, a great operation to distribute school supplies organized by the association "A light for the islands" took place from 9 a.m. to 13 p.m. at rue du Round de Pond in Quartier d'Orléans.

Created in 2018 following the devastating passage of Irma by Lydia Lawrence, a singer with a big heart from Quartier d'Orléans, the association "A light for the islands" aims to raise funds to help in their daily lives. children of the world affected by poverty or natural disasters, whether through the purchase of school materials or the organization of school and cultural outings or vacation stays, a project that Lydia would also like to set up under form of exchanges between children from mainland France and children from Saint-Martin, which would allow the latter to discover the winter there and the snow while the others taste the Creole culture. For this third edition of the distribution of school supplies, a big collection was organized upstream at the Super U in La Motte-Servolex in Savoie, where Lydia now lives even if she never stays very long without returning to her island. Forced to put the actions of the association "A light for the islands" on hold because of the global pandemic linked to covid-19, Lydia Lawrence resumes her sincere commitment to the education of the new generations of Saint-Martin. As she puts it so well, among ten students, one will perhaps become a doctor, another a lawyer or even an artist, a profession she has chosen, as well as her daughter Estelle, also a member of the association. Thanks to their sponsor with the company Air Caraïbes, which donated plane tickets to bring the supplies collected to Saint-Martin, Lydia, Estelle and Dounia were able to distribute more than 60 kilos of school materials (equivalent to three full suitcases) to children from all parts of the island. The toddlers received a bag containing the little schoolboy's kit with markers, colored pencils, pens, a notebook, because education and creativity are essential. Knowledge is power.

A second distribution took place the next day, this Thursday, September 8 in the morning, at the nursery school in Quartier d'Orléans. School supplies, books of tales and stories will come to supply the school library.

Also active in the Talents Créoles SXM association, Lydia Lawrence will perform in concert this Saturday, September 10 at Sandy's Too (91 rue de la savane in Grand-Case), she will be accompanied on stage by Estelle Lawrence, Manely Dumoulin, Denis Note and other artists of the association. Admission is €15, part of the proceeds will be donated to the association organizing the Talents Créoles SXM event and the association Une lumière pour les îles. The “Variette Caribbean – Les Divas” evening-concert is an initiative supported by the Collectivity of Saint-Martin. Doors open at 19 p.m. and the talents will sing until midnight. _VX
