An advance of five million euros has been allocated to Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe under the EU Solidarity Fund, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

"The Commission has decided to allocate an advance of almost 5 million euros to the outermost regions of Saint Martin and Guadeloupe under the EU Solidarity Fund, in order to help restore public infrastructure and services and to cover the costs of emergency expenses and cleaning, "said the Commission in a statement received in Paris.

“The calculation of this advance is based on the preliminary analysis of the request from the French authorities received on November 27. Once the analysis is complete, the Commission will propose a final amount of aid which will have to be adopted by the European Parliament and the Council, "she said. The damage caused in September by hurricanes Irma and Maria in Saint-Martin and in Guadeloupe, was estimated at nearly two billion euros by the government of Edouard Philippe. At the end of November, the Minister, Annick Girardin went to Brussels to ask the Commission for a request to activate the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF). The purpose of this fund is to cope with major natural disasters and to express the European Union's solidarity with the stricken regions. _AF
