Borders: the CCIs of Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten call on the authorities

The Interprofessional Consular Chamber of Saint-Martin (CCISM) and the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sint-Maarten (COCI) have sent a joint letter to governments, Parliament and the Territorial Council of the Collectivity of Saint-Martin to alert on the impact of the border closure on the island's economy.

By press release, the two chambers call on the local authorities:

“The Consular Chambers of the two parts of the island are joining in calling for a joint intensified management strategy for the health crisis. We hereby submit to you our analysis of the means that could be implemented in both parts of our territory. Indeed, we wish to highlight the unfortunate consequences engendered by a premature and precipitous closure of the border, thereby eluding any possibility of implementing organizational solutions between the two territories. Many sectors are overdue on both parts of the island. The economic pillar of the island knows no borders. Residents and visitors alike are used to eating, dining and doing business on both sides of the island, and we believe the restrictions put in place are not the right approach ”.

The Consular Chambers of the island underline the importance of establishing their partnership undertaken in 2019 and aimed at "taking into account the specificities of both sides of the island, identifying the axes which will make it possible to develop common solutions and thus pool the financial and human resources in the interest of businesses in Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten ”.

The two Chambers are organizing a virtual and joint press conference this Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. It will be broadcast live on the Facebook page of the CCISM and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sint-Maarten (CCI Saint-Martin, St Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry).
