After four qualifying matches, the Saint-Martin U14s won their ticket to the semi-finals of the tournament against... Martinique. The match was played this Friday, August 19 for a ticket in the final against Anguilla or Guyana. A final that will finally oppose Martinique to Guyana.

Placed in group 2 with Martinique, Grenada, St-Lucia and the Cayman Islands for the CFU Under 14 Challenge, the Saint-Martin players have chained no less than four meetings in the space of five days. “We had focused the preparation on the physical aspect of things”, underlines Marcéna Jasaron, the coach. Thus to launch its tournament, the Saint-Martin selection took the measure of the Granada team with the score of 6-1. The next day, it was against a good team from Martinique that the U14s were facing. "The match against Martinique was difficult." emphasizes Serge Weinum, vice-president of the Saint-Martin football league. And for good reason, after opening the scoring, Saint-Martin cashed twice and lost the match 2-1. "We may have been too relaxed in this match," says the coach. "It's the first time in the space of two months that we have lost a game."

After victories against Saint Lucia and the Cayman Islands, the players won their (almost) qualification for the semi-finals. “The boys showed great discipline and great temerity despite the physical effort that had to be provided,” supports the coaching staff. “Against the Cayman Islands, we had a very solid and tough team in the duels. The players rose to the occasion to qualify for the semi-finals. A qualifying ticket obtained thanks to the status of best second in the competition.

In half facing … Martinique

As a wink, the semi-final was played this Friday, August 19 against Martinique. “It is undoubtedly the best draw we can have,” rejoices Joseph Mendy, the assistant coach. “We have seen and reviewed the group meeting against this team. We have analyzed our mistakes and we know that their game is based on lateral transitions. We have studied it well. There is also a feeling of revenge that drives us all.

Unfortunately for the young people of Saint-Martin, this Friday Martinique won with a score of 1-0 thereby depriving the local vintage of a first final. _pc
