Fires at the Cul-de-Sac ecosite: explanations from VERDE SXM

0

On Sunday again, a new outbreak of fire occurred at the Grandes Cayes ecosite in Cul-de-Sac causing annoying smoke in individuals depending on the direction of the winds. Situations which unfortunately turn out to be more and more frequent.

In addition to the treatment of waste produced on the island, the company VERDE SXM has been entrusted by the community of Saint-Martin with the extraction and sorting of old waste buried on the historic landfill of the Grandes Cayes site. This operation, commonly called "LANDFILL MINING", makes it possible to recover the inert materials contained in the old waste and to treat the residual waste according to the standards in force and current regulations.

Reached by telephone, the operations director of VERDE SXM, Damien Vassas, told us that he was well aware of the inconvenience caused and will do everything in his power to reduce or even end the nuisance.

"This delicate technical operation sometimes lets the ambient air rush into the heart of the mass of waste making it possible to supply the smoldering fires with oxygen", he underlines. "All the technical measures will be taken to control these fires and the site is monitored 24 hours a day, every day of the year"._AF
