Education: Do the students of Saint Martin feel ready for the bac?

0

After Irma's visit to Saint-Martin, the start of the school year was postponed until the end of the All Saints holidays. High school students therefore had two months of lessons less. Despite overtime hours put in place during holidays or free hours, teachers 'and parents' unions fear that the accumulated delay could not be recovered. But what do the students think? Do they feel ready for their exams?

On its Facebook page, the territorial youth council launched a poll on Friday, June 1. More than half of the 33 people who voted said they felt "100% ready", while the others clicked on "not really, but it will be fine". So mixed results.

For our part, we interviewed some students, in order to highlight a trend as it is impossible to say how their opinion is representative of the majority of students. And above all how their stress and their doubts about their abilities are different from what they would have felt if it weren't for Irma. Whatever their feelings, the students were unanimous: they were forced to fly over part of the program, at their expense.

“All the terminales are stressed at the moment. We feel forgotten, ”says a student at the literary terminal in the school district, who does not feel ready at all and speaks on behalf of her comrades. A few days before the famous philosophy test, she prefers to stay at home and cram annals rather than continuing to go to class. “With the delay we had, and despite the courses set up during the holidays, we had to work faster and therefore less well. That's why we don't feel ready, ”she laments.

Opinions differ depending on the students' ability to work on their own, and their previous difficulties. Those who were already having trouble keeping up before Irma are even more behind this year when the teachers had to speed up the pace. We must also take into consideration students who never feel ready anyway, whatever the circumstances.

Another student, schooled at the school in the Scientific terminal, and reputed to be brilliant, is a little more confident: “I generally feel quite prepared. My teachers really did their bit and did not skimp on the means (emails, overtime during the week between noon and two as well as during the holidays) so that we are as best as possible. Good after, to say that I am not 100% ready is an understatement. We tried as best we could to finish the program by going over the concepts in progress, so it was a lot of personal work. At the approach of the bac I still feel confident. Not that the fingers are in the nose but that it is not the apocalypse ”.

Three Management Administration students in vocational high school also say they feel prepared, despite everything. “We have worked a lot. We worked overtime in high school during our free hours during the week, and at home. We took records, we did lots of exercises that our teachers corrected, ”they explain.

One of their comrades flatly considers himself to be "100% ready". “I studied in Guadeloupe for four months after the hurricane. I returned to Saint-Martin at the start of the school year in January. Since then, the pace of the class has accelerated to complete the program before the exams, which has been achieved in all subjects thanks to the additional lessons and the determination of the class. I am still in contact with my comrades from Guadeloupe and at the moment, we are on the same level ”.

All you have to do is wish them all good luck for the last few hours of revision, and cross your fingers…
