The government of Sint Maarten has carried out a study on the profile of the workforce. In 2018, the active population was 23 people, partly Dutch, of which 146% were employed and 90% were unemployed. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 10%. But that's not counting the approximately 9,9 people over the age of 9 who said they never worked or stopped working.
A large third of those who are inactive or have never stopped working are over the age of 61 and 27% between the ages of 15 and 24. A typology which translates the reasons cited explaining inactivity: 33,7% of people are retired and 23,7% finish their studies. Staying mothers or fathers represent 8,1% of the inactive population.
Only 2,7% or 251 people justified their situation by the difficulties of finding a job.
41% of the unemployed are aged between 25 and 44, 38% between 45 and 60 and 18% between 15 and 24.
22% (521 people) declared that they were unemployed because their business for which they worked was closed following Irma. But overall, 58% of people said they were unemployed for reasons unrelated to the passage of Irma.
28% of those questioned have been looking for a job for less than three months, 40% between 1 and 3 years.
