"The prosecutor's office has taken note of the concerns of the population expressed on social networks following the recent fire at the landfill on Tuesday August 7 to Wednesday August 8," informed the Sint Maarten prosecutor's office on Wednesday August 7.

"The prosecutor's office has taken note of the concerns of the population expressed on social networks following the recent fire at the landfill on Tuesday August 7 to Wednesday August 8," informed the Sint Maarten prosecutor's office on Wednesday August 7.

Several people are said to have asked whether or not the prosecution will prosecute the Sint Maarten government. The prosecution indicates that in recent months, it has received several complaints about illegal practices taking place in the landfill. Earlier this year, the prosecutor's office gathered a wide range of evidence to corroborate these complaints. In April 2018, the prosecution informed the government of Sint Maarten that it had opened an investigation into the landfill situation.

“We regard the current situation at the landfill as a crime which affects both the health of the inhabitants and our environment. This is unacceptable. Therefore, we will analyze waste streams, perform measurements, assess legal roles and responsibilities, and apply criminal law by prosecuting affected parties. ”

The Public Prosecutor's Office combines its efforts with those of the Sint Maarten Police and Fire Department, the VROMI Inspectorate, the VSA Inspectorate and various stakeholders in society. And this, in order to maximize the chances of a change.

“By doing this, we hope to contribute to a sustainable future for the landfill so that human rights are respected.”

For more than 30 years, the problem of waste treatment has been neglected. The prosecution is aware that it will not be easy to find a solution and that the ongoing investigation will take time. “The fire affecting our territory today (Wednesday) will be added to our investigation. In this regard, we observed that basic security measures aimed at controlling access to the landfill or a basic fire extinguishing system to prevent new ones are still not being applied. ”(File photo) (Source: www.soualigapost.com)
