On the announcement of the death of the former head of the fire and rescue center of the Saint-Martin barracks, Bernard MAES, the Amicale des Sapeurs Pompiers de Saint-Martin pays him a vibrant tribute and sends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and all his colleagues bereaved by his sad passing.

Born on January 12, 1956 in Pointe-à-Pitre, Bernard MAES was a valiant, dynamic and altruistic young man. Thirsty for adventure and wanting to travel the world, it was in the flower of his youth that he left for the metropolis for new adventures.

Lieutenant MAES began his career with the fire brigade on July 1, 1978 in the Essonne department, after passing the competition in Caen (Calvados) in March of the same year. He was then 22 years old.

His professional development is punctuated by the interventions and missions he performs as a mechanic in the rescue center.

In 1990, when he was a master corporal, he joined the departmental workshop of the SDIS of Guadeloupe where he worked for 10 years as a mechanic. It was then that his status as a firefighter allowed him to take the NCO competition in 1993, which now placed him at the rank of master sergeant. However, constrained by family obligations, he decided to integrate the SDIS of Ain in 2000 where he made a short stay of 3 years allowing him all the same to access the passage to the rank of Warrant Officer.

Lieutenant MAES was a traveler and was not afraid to make new beginnings despite his attachment to his large family in Le Gosier and Pointe-A-Pitre, where the slightest opportunity to spend time with his children was worth his time. 'gold.

Thus in 2003, a new opportunity presented itself to him to return to the West Indies, and it was as assistant to the chef that he joined the rescue center of Saint-Martin, which has since become his adopted island.

He spent the rest of his career there, successively obtaining the ranks of Major in 2007 and Lieutenant of 1st Class in 2012, the advancement to the rank of Commander of the former Chief of Center, allows him to be propelled to this function which he will exercise until the end of his career as a professional firefighter Lieutenant out of class in 2020.

The career of Lieutenant MAES has been exemplary and his career has been, like any great career, punctuated by significant interventions.

Even though his career as a professional firefighter had come to an end with a well-deserved retirement, he still remained, for the benefit of all, a volunteer firefighter at the rescue center and a member of our association.

He unfortunately left us on Monday, October 3, 2022, discreetly, as usual...

We can only say thank you, My Lieutenant!

The friendly firefighters of Saint-Martin thanks you for the immeasurable service rendered to the Saint-Martin population.

We wish all the strength and courage to his family, loved ones and all his colleagues bereaved by his sad death.

Bon voyage and good rest Lieutenant MAES.

The Collectivity of Saint-Martin, its president Louis Mussington, its elected officials and its staff, associate themselves with the pain of the family and loved ones of Bernard MAES and send them their most sincere condolences.

The Prefect, Vincent Berton and all the staff of the Prefecture also send their sincere condolences to the family, relatives and colleagues of Lieutenant Bernard MAES.
