In Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, the bronchiolitis epidemic has just started without surprise. For some time, the Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has been on the alert.

In Saint-Martin, 66 cases of this respiratory infection of the small bronchi have been estimated since the start of the epidemic, according to the last epidemiological bulletin from InVS. In Saint-Barthélemy, 27 cases have been recorded. The institute recommends that the population consult a doctor in the event of suggestive signs.

How is the virus transmitted?

The virus is very contagious. “It is spread through sneezing or coughing or through soiled hands and objects by an infected person. The common cold in children and adults can be the cause of bronchiolitis in infants, according to the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (Inpes). Bronchiolitis usually starts with a simple cold and cough, then the child is uncomfortable breathing and may have difficulty eating and drinking. Coughing fits are very common and may be accompanied by wheezing. ”
