On October 17, the senatorial delegation of Overseas auditioned Annick Girardin on "a first assessment of the actions of the executive concerning the overseas territories since 2017". The overseas minister was notably questioned about the state of progress of the reconstruction in Saint-Martin.

"The reconstruction of Saint-Martin after the passage of Irma questions our ability to work together on a small territory," admits Annick Girardin. “Intense work, in concert, has already been carried out by both. (…) On a small territory, we go quickly to confrontation. Multiplying the interlocutors will allow us to find a happy medium, ”she conceives.

The Minister addressed the subject of the revision of the natural risk prevention plan (PPRN), "a subject of great divergence". “The President of the Republic wanted to go quickly. Everyone agreed that it was necessary. But the state may have gone too fast in a context where the actors were not necessarily ready, "admits the minister. “I understand that populations and economic actors can be shocked when they are shown a map with a zoning not accompanied by comments; they fear that this new cartography could jeopardize tourist activity. However, my priority is everyone's safety, ”she adds. And to specify that she asked that a "consultation be set up so that the population can go and say what is wrong with the PPRN".

Finally, today, for the Minister of Overseas, the stage of reconstruction has passed: "it is time to open up reflection on the economic and tourist development of the island." (soualigapost.com)
