2nd wave of covid-19: how many tests are performed on average, positive cases revealed? (end)

For nearly a month, the number of confirmed cases of covid-19 has increased sharply on the island, on both sides. Many people justify this increase by an increase in the number of tests: we test more, so we find more positive cases. We wanted to assess this observation by comparing the data from the first wave and the second wave on August 21.

Second wave partly French

The second wave began between July 17 and July 24 with 15 new cases partly Dutch and 6 partly French. Then the number exploded to reach 130 confirmed cases between July 17 and August 21 in the French part and 277 over the same period in the Dutch part.

As of July 17, 1 people had been tested and 056 confirmed positive. During the following two weeks, 46 tests were carried out and 127 confirmed cases. The number of weekly tests was then multiplied by 7 in early August with the implementation of a second free screening campaign in the neighborhoods. There are a total of 5,7 tests in the first week of August and 587 in the second week. In the space of fourteen days, nearly 551 tests were performed and 1 positive cases recorded.

The third week of August 311 people were tested. On the other hand, the number of positive cases is rising sharply (+67 in 7 days) because the ARS received positive tests taken the previous week.

In the end, between July 17 and August 21, 1 tests were carried out and 576 cases confirmed.

Compared to the first wave, the number of weekly tests has been multiplied by more than 6 during the last 5 weeks with an average of 315,2 against 51 during the first wave. Also reported weekly, the number of confirmed cases has multiplied by 5,2 from 5 to 26.

Even if the number of tests performed per week is significantly higher today compared to the first wave, the number of positive cases revealed remains almost the same for a test: 0,09 positive cases for a test during the first wave and 0,08 today.

Second wave partly Dutch

As of July 17, 590 people had been tested and 91 confirmed positive. During the following two weeks, 143 tests were carried out and 31 confirmed cases. In the next two weeks, the number of tests tripled and 141 confirmed cases.

It was during the second and third of August that the greatest number of people tested was recorded (407 and 433). It was also during these 2 weeks that the greatest number of positive cases was confirmed: 80 and 99 respectively.

Since the start of the second wave (5 weeks), 827 tests have been performed and 277 confirmed cases, for a positivity rate of 33,49%. The average of tests per week is 165,4 compared to some 51 in the first wave, the number of weekly tests has more than tripled. Reported weekly, the number of confirmed cases rose from 9,62 in the first wave to 55,4 in the second wave, it was multiplied by 5,75. The number of positive cases revealed by test is up: 0,33 today against 0,18 during the first wave.

Note: in order to compare fairly, we took the figures as of August 21 because the last health bulletin for the French part dates from August 21.
