Getting vaccinated against covid-19 is “a civic act”

"A citizen act", this is what the stake of getting vaccinated represents for Drs Vangeederhuysen and Bartoli, the first two doctors to be vaccinated yesterday in Saint-Martin.

“I chose to do this for two reasons; the first is to ensure personal protection for myself and those around me, the second to provide protection to the population. It is a civic act, ”says Dr Vangeederhuysen. "We will perhaps have a third wave and the vaccine appears to be the only tool to win this race against covid", he continues while understanding the apprehensions of some. “On the one hand, there are people who will agree to be vaccinated, on the other hand those who are against and who will refuse. And there are intermediary people who are still asking questions, ”he agrees. “But the vaccine has been shown to be effective. If we weigh the disadvantages and the advantages, the latter are greater. It is true that we do not know everything about the vaccine, but today we have no choice, we must be in favor of vaccination, ”he says.

“You have to learn to protect yourself. We are going to live with this virus for a long time to come, ”adds Dr Bartoli. “Today there is no case of yellow fever in France because there are strict border controls, we have to be vaccinated if we want to go to countries where there is yellow fever. With the covid, it will be the same, ”he adds.

"It was Russian roulette"

Drs Vangeederhuysen and Bartoli are among the 57 healthcare professionals - mostly doctors - who this week received the first injection of the Pfizer vaccine by Dr Benas, head of the vaccination center at Louis-Constant Fleming hospital and who has worked within the covid unit. “Even if we were protecting ourselves, it was Russian roulette… We have to get vaccinated for ourselves but also for society. Today we are strongly impacted by the covid to which we must say stop, ”he believes. (soualigapost.com)
