A figure that hurts! The nautical sector of Saint-Martin is "more than 70% disaster" indicated the Federation of Nautical Industries (FIN) which requests the opening by the State of an exceptional credit of 10 million euros.

“All businesses have been affected: buildings demolished, dislocated pontoons, destroyed equipment, out-of-service tools… More than 1.000 pleasure craft damaged, nearly half of which were wrecked.

The nautical sector of Saint-Martin is today more than 70% affected, "said FIN in a press release, following an assessment mission conducted from October 1 to 10.

"Without even quantifying the cost of the damaged fleet, the damage to the infrastructure and equipment of companies is estimated at almost 18 million euros, the projected operating losses at 40 million euros", specifies- t she asking "the opening of an exceptional credit of 10 million euros in the framework of the draft Finance Law (PLF) currently debated in Parliament".

This envelope must make it possible to "contribute to the first measures for the evacuation of wrecks, the purchase of tools and basic equipment to resume part of the activity, the repair of pontoons, holds and handling equipment and to compensate for the absence or insufficiency of insurance, "according to the same source.

The nautical sector of Saint-Martin is made up of 68 companies which generate a turnover of 95 million euros and employ nearly 400 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, specifies the FIN.

Two-thirds of these companies are involved in the rental of pleasure boats and nautical activities (board sports, diving, etc.).

The other companies are involved in the repair and maintenance of boats, the sale of equipment and fittings, service and training.

They are located around 4 marinas, which themselves generate a turnover of 7 million euros and employ 25 employees, underlines the FIN. _AF
