ENVIRONMENT / Waste sorting: we are very, very, very far from the mark!

95% of packaging waste buried at the Grandes Cayes ecosite should not.

In fact, 5 of the 100 tonnes of packaging waste buried in 5 is recyclable and should therefore not be found underground. The reason for this situation? Poor sorting of the population (households and businesses) of its waste. Only 370 tonnes have been correctly sorted, i.e. only 2018 tonnes of packaging, cardboard, cans, glass, etc., have been thrown in the yellow and green sorting terminals and not in the brown containers .

At the beginning of the month, Verde SXM, which manages the ecosite on behalf of the Community, mandated a design office to "determine precisely the composition of the buried garbage". The weight of buried packaging and paper is estimated at 3 tonnes and that of glass at 584 tonnes.

This recyclable waste is now underground and will never decompose. If they can be reused, they do not decompose.

In addition to the pollution thus generated, they limit the storage capacity of the cell. "The cell is fundamentally limited," says Verde SXM. "Gaining space in the cell increases its lifespan for so-called ultimate waste, which is not technically recyclable," she adds, thus encouraging people to sort. (soualigapost.com)
