Covid-19: Saint-Martin joins the “OBEPINE network” for the detection of the SARS-COV-2 virus in wastewater

On March 17, the European Commission recommended that member states set up “as soon as possible” a national wastewater monitoring system in order to monitor the spread of Covid-19, and in particular its variants.

In hexagonal France, this monitoring is topical with the “OBEPINE network” (Epidemiological Observatory in Wastewater)  cutting edge on the subject. This network aims to put several hundred wastewater treatment plants under “Covid” surveillance.

In Saint-Martin, and because the sanitary situation is the key to economic recovery, the Water and Sanitation Establishment of Saint-Martin (EEASM) joined the “OBEPINE network” in February 2021, anticipating recommendations European.

The objective is to have contamination indicators at the level of the Collectivity of Saint-Martin.

This method makes it possible, in relation to clinical data (PCR or antigen tests carried out on the population), to anticipate epidemiological trends by around 7 days and that at the scale of the territory, but also to detect the presence of possible “variants. ”.

Two samples are taken each week from the two treatment plants in Saint-Martin (Quartier d'Orléans and Pointe des Canonniers) and provide a detailed analysis every 3 to 4 days, per population basin.

This investment effort will be maintained during the health crisis.

President Daniel Gibbs would like to congratulate “the EEASM team which, thanks to this new analysis tool, positions Saint-Martin in an exemplary approach in terms of collecting health data. This is a first for the Antilles. We are thus joining the 200 municipalities in France that are part of the Obépine network ”.
